1) Why is it important for children to receive music lessons?

I believe that music should be an integral part of every child’s education. And it should start early. Music is Math, langUage, hiStory, readIng, and sCience. A study in 2012 by professors at Kansas University showed that elementary schools with an outstanding music program had an increase of 20% in standardized math and English test scores. I am trained in the Orff-Schulwerk Approach which engages the students through speech, drama, singing and playing instruments. We have a lot of fun in music class, but to some it may look and sound like chaos. :) My favorite quote from Carl Orff, who developed this approach: ”Tell me, I forget, show me, I remember, involve me, I understand.” That is the best way to learn – by doing. There have been many wonderful moments when a student who does not “shine” academically “blossoms” musically right in front of our eyes!

2) What is something you deeply believe in as a Christian teacher?

As a Christian teacher, I want everyone to know that Jesus is my Lord and Savior and He can be yours too. What better way to show that than by having a relationship with parents, church and school. My favorite concert is Grandparents and Friends day at the elementary school. What a support system our students have!

3) What is something about you that most people don’t know?

I was in the college honor choir for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. I was chosen to record the songs in the studio with John Williams as our conductor. Being involved in music leads to many wonderful experiences!
